Adoption Books

There are a lot of books out there. Here are the ones we have and we think they are a great start for answering questions your children may have. There are many more that you can search out on Amazon.

*A Mother for Choco by Keiko Kasza

This one is great for children around 2 or 3 years old. It is about a little orphan bird who sets out to find his mother. He asks several animals if they are his mother (Much like the familiar book Are You My Mother, but with a twist). The animals point out how he doesn’t look like them. At the end he becomes part of a family in which none of the members look alike. Great for teaching kids that you don’t have to look alike to be a family.

*I Don’t Have Your Eyes by Carrie A. Kitze

Another book that points out how families don’t have to look alike in order to be alike.

*What is Adoption? Helping Non-Adopted Children Understand Adoption  by Sofie Stergianis and Rita McDowell

The best overall book to help explain adoption to non-adopted children. Includes information about domestic and international adoption, appropriate language to use around adopted children/families, discussion of birthmothers/birthfamilies, and how adoption is made legal and permanent by a judge. This book is great to read now, but children will understand this book more as they get to be school-age. It is an excellent resource. This book is not on Amazon. I got it from AdoptionShop.com.

*Over the Moon by Karen Katz

A story about a family who goes to pick up a baby girl in a foreign country.

*Shaoey and Dot: Bug Meets Bundle  by Mary Beth and Steven Curtis Chapman

A story about a family that adopts from China, although it never actually mentions China specifically. It tells the story of a child who is adopted into a family, including the process at an orphanage and the airplane ride home. The book rhymes, so it is another good one for young children.

*It’s Okay to Be Different by Todd Parr

A book about all kinds of differences, one of which is being adopted. Also includes other differences such as disabilities, being a “different color”, having a big nose or ears, or having glasses. It is a fun and easy to read book and will connect with young children.
